SRI GANGADHESWARAR TEMPLE, KARUVALUR NEAR SEVUR IN TIRUPPUR DISTRICT- A PART OF KONGU TEMPLES HERITAGE VISIT

03rd February 2019.
This temple is adjacent to Sri Karunakara Venkatramana Perumal Temple. This Temple’s  sthala purana is linked to the Avanashi Shiva Temple. Since the Sivachariyar’s residence is just adjacent to the temple, Sivachariyar’s son helped us to visit this temple.

Presiding deity   : Sri Gangadeswarar
Ambal               : Sri Kamalambigai.

The important salient features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a Gurudathoon or Deepa sthambam. Entrance arch instead of Rajagopuram with stucco image of Shiva and Parvathy on the top. Inside the temple complex, Subramaniyar Sannadhi is in between Sri Gangadeswarar and Kamalambigai amman temple. All the three sannadhis are facing east with respective Vahanas and palipedam. Sri Gangadeswarar sannadhi was built with sanctum antarala, arthamandapam and a mukamandapam. Moolavar is swayambu. In Koshtam, Dhakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar and Durgai.

Ambal Sri Kamalambigai is also constructed similar to main sanctum facing east. In koshtam Vaishnavi, Vaaraaki, and Brahmi. The old Shiva Lingam and a Rishabam are in the arthamandapam.

In the outer prakaram sannadhi for Chandran, Vinayagar, Pancha Lingas, Sandikeswarar Valli Devasena Subramaniyar, Gajalakshmi ( Stucco image  on the wall ). Bairavar, Sani Bhagwan and Suryan.

There is no inscription found. Since the Perumal temple adjacent this temple was constructed by Kongu Chozhas before 11th to 12th Century, we may take that both the temples are constructed during the same period and latter contributions from Vijayanagara Dynasty.
