Anbil Sathyavageeswarar Temple / Anbil Alanthurai Satyavageeswarar Temple / அன்பில் சத்தியவாகீசுவரர் கோயில், Anbil, Tiruchirappalli District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 111th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva sthalam  and 57th  Sthalam on the northern side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. This place is called as ANBIL ( Anbil – has three parts mel – Middle – Keel and this temple is in Keelanbil.). The temple Anbilanthurai, is the combination of names, the place Anbil and Alanthurai. The Aniruddha Brahmarayar, the Prime minister to Sundara Chozha  belongs to this place. The famous “Anbil cheppedu”, which gave the history of Chozhas was discovered from this place.

In Periya Puranam, Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar came to this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thirukkanur.

Some of the important features of this temple are....
The temple is facing east with a 5 Tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are after the Rajagopuram. Moolavar is of Swayambhu on a square avudayar. The outer sanctum is of moat/ akazhi type. In Koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Mahavishnu with Surya and Chandra on both sides, Brahma and Durgai.

In the prakaram Ambal is in a separate sannadhi. In the inner prakaram Chevi saitha Vinayagar, Sri Valli Devasena Subramaniar, Vishwanatha Linga & Visalakshi, Lingothbavar, Pichadanar, Bhairavar, Shaniswarar, Nalvar, Saptamatrikas, Nataraja Sabha, and Chandikeswarar. Navagrahas are in the outer prakaram. All the Navagrahas are facing Sun.

ARCHITECTURE
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and Artha mandapam. A vesara Vimana is on the sanctum. There are many sculptures on the front mandapa pillars, may be Nagarathar thirupani. Some of them are, Two snakes worshiping Shiva, Snake tail on one side and head on the other side of the pillar, and Sarbamandalam etc,.
The walls of the arthamanda has the bas-reliefs of Vishnu Brahma, Parvati, Agni, Surya and Chandra worshiping Lord Shiva.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
The original temple was of a madakoil may be built by Kochengat Chozha, rebuilt during Parantaka Chozha-I period with stone.
From the inscriptions, the middle entrance might have been built during 10th to 12th century. The Temple might have been rebuilt at a latter stage by, Hoysalas and Nattukottai Nagarathar.

This place Anbil was in Rajaraja valanattu Kilarkootrathu ( Kalarkootrathu ), Vadakarai Rajaraja valanattu Kilarkootrathu Anbil  and Lord Shiva was called as Anbiludayar,  Thiruvalanthurai Udayanayanar.

The Pandya King Kobanmar Thiribhuvana Chakravarthi Kulasekara Thevar’s 3+1 reign year inscription records that Housing plots are sold to this temple’s Devaradiyar Kaikolars, by Thiripanezhi Mudaliyar. This inscription also mentions some of the exempted housing plots ( inscription was damaged in many portions ).

The Pandya King Kobanmar Thiribhuvana Chakravarthi Kulasekara Thevar’s 11th reign year inscription records the endowment of Naivedyam by Aachiraman Kulothunga Pallavarayar of Kaikola mudaliar caste, for which 3 ma land was gifted to the temple after purchase.

Rajendra Chozha-I’s 4th reign year inscription records the endowment of poojas and Naivedyam for the newly established Adhi Chandeswarar ( which was damaged...? ), by the Anbil perunkuri sabhai. For the same land of 280 kalam ( 5 ma ) was donated.

The Hoysala king Vira Ramanathan’s 8th reign year inscription, records the endowment of pooja, Naivedyam and Suryathevan nandhavanam by Vadavazhinattu Uthungathungavalanattu Kundrakootrathu Cheruvidai mangalamudayan Periyan Thazhi Pandyarayan for which a land was bought and gifted to this temple after converting to cultivable land.
The Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 9th May 2004.

LEGENDS
“Sevi saitha Vinayagar” –( செவி சாய்த்த வினாயகர் )  is seen in hearing posture with head turned  to receive the hymns of Thirugnanasambandar and he is also called as ‘Samaveda Vinayagar’, since Jaimini families were migrated during Rajaraja period. They had done samaveda parayanam  in front of Vinayagar. 

There is also another version that during Thirugnanasambandar’s visit, he has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva from other bank of River Kollidam. Since the sound was very low, Vinayagar leaned his head and ear to hear the hymns.

Brahma worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, hence Lord Shiva is called as Brahmapureeswarar. Since sage Vageesar also worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple, is called as Sathyavageeswarar.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Pradosham, Maha Shivaratri in Masi ( Feb – March), Margazhi Thiruvathirai ( Dec – Jan ) and Panguni Uthiram in the month Panguni ( March – April ).

Sri Karumbeswarar Temple /Sri Karumbeeshwarar Temple / Semmeninathar Temple /திருக்கானூர் செம்மேனிநாதர் திருக்கோவில், கரும்பேஸ்வரர் / Thirukkanur, Thanjavur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 110th Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 56th  Sthalam on the North side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. The Temple is on the banks of river Kollidam. The temple alone stands with paddy fields around. Now there is no settlement found around the temple and called as “Manal Medu” near Vishnampettai.     

In Periya Puranam, Sekkizhar records that Thirugnanasambandar, after stayed for some days at Thirumazhapadi and came to this temple.

Some of the important features of this temple are.....
The temple is facing east with a two tier Rajagopuram.  A solar and lunar eclipse reliefs are carved in the form of Sun, moon and Snake on the ceiling of Rajagopuram. Balipeedam and Rishabam are in front of the sanctum. In sanctum Moolavar is swayambhu. In koshtam Pichadanar, Kalabhairavar, Dakshinamurthy, Brahma and Durgai.   

Nagar, Vishnu, Dharmasastha, Nalvar, Chandran and Suriyan are in the Artha mandapam.  In prakaram Sri Valli Devasena  Subramaniar, Vinayagar and Chandikeswarar.

Ambal is of salakrama Vigraha. Ambal is in a separate temple  facing south with a vesara Vimana. There is no murtis in the koshtam.
The sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam. A Vesara Vimana is on the sanctum sanctorum.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Once the temple was completely covered with sand and a sugar cane was grown on the top of the sand heap. The temple was discovered after removing the heap of sand and hence the Lord Shiva is called as Karumbeswarar. The original temple might have existed before 7th Century. As per the inscriptions This place was in Rajaraja valanattu Poikayurnattu Panipathi mangalam, Karikala Chozha Chathurvedi mangalam Thirukkanur.

The outer prakara of the temple inscription mentions Lord Shiva as Ikshuvaneswara of this Village. Though the inscription seems to be a continuous one, in the palm leaf it appears to comprise two fragments. One Part of the inscription starts with Vira Rajendran’s meikeerthi, the year is not known.

The other piece records the donation of land to this temple and also mentions a Vishnu temple’s name as Tirumerur Koil, probably Manavala Alwar Temple. Whether both fragments belongs to single inscription or not.

Another Palm leaf inscription and written on the Gopura belongs to Adhirajendra’s 3rd reign year, records the sale of land and house by the sabhai / assembly, Alaiyur a Brahmadeya in Poigainadu which was a sub division of Vadakarai Rajendrasinga valanadu to the Vishnu temple,  and the land was near the Veerarajendradeva Vaikkal.
Another Veerarajendras’ 6th reign year records the conversion of land in to Tax free after getting 60 Kasu.

The Pandya period 1355 CE, inscription of Maravarman alias Tribhuvana Chakravarthi Kulasekara Deva’s 41st reign year,  is damaged in the middle portion. Mentions the temple of Panipattimangalam alias Karikala Chozha Chathurvedi mangalam, in Poikai nadu a sub division of Vadakarai Rajaraja valanadu. The endowment and donation is not known.    

During 1924 flood,  the temple was completely covered with sand dune and a sugar cane was grown on the top. The temple was brought back to worship with appreciable effort of N Subramania Iyer. Hence called as Karumbeswarar.

Maha kumbhabhishekam was conducted on 24th August 1980.

LEGENDS
Parasurama was the son of Sage Jamadagni and Renuka devi. The Local king came to know the divine qualities of Kamadhenu during one of his visit. When Parasurama was away the local king came to the ashram and took away forcibly the Kamadhenu. Angered Parasurama killed the King along with the 21 Kshatriyas and rescued the Kamadhenu. Due to Killing of he incurred the Kshatriya dosha  and get rid of the same he came to this temple and worshiped Lord Shiva.   

Ma Parvati had chosen this place for doing penance on Lord Shiva. Pleased by he penance Lord Shiva appeared in the form of red fire and praised as “Semmeni Nathar” and Ambal is called as Shiva Yoga nayaki. 
It is believed that Surya worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple. Sun rays falls on moolavar on 2nd to 4th April every year.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from Regular Poojas, special poojas are conducted on Avani Moola Star Day in the month August – September, Thai Pournami day / Full moon day and in the month Panguni ie April 2nd to 4th when sunrays falls on moolavar. No Special Poojas or festivals are celebrated in this temple.

The temple kept opened between 10.00 hrs to 11.30 hra and 15.30 hrs to 17.00 hrs.

The temple is about 5 KM from Thirukattupalli. There is no proper transport  to reach this temple.  Nearest village is Vishnampettai. 
From Thirukattupalli one can reach the temple through rented cycle. From Thirukattupalli, hire an auto to go to the temple.
The temple is 5 KM from Thirukattupalli, 18.5 KM from Thiruvaiyaru, 30 KM from Thanjavur, 41 KM from Tiruchirappalli, 51 KM from Ariyalur and 332 KM from Chennai.
Nearest Railway station is Thanjavur.

Sri Alanduraiyar Temple / Vadamoolanathar Temple / Yogavaneswarar Temple / வடமூலநாதர் கோவில் / அருள்மிகு ஆலந்துறையார் கோவில், திருப்பழுவூர் / Pazhuvur ( Palur ), Ariyalur District, Tamil Nadu.

This is the 109th   Thevara Paadal Petra Shiva Sthalam and 55th Shiva sthalam on the north side of river Kaveri in Chozha Nadu. The place was once called as Pazhuvur and now the temple is in Keezhapalur, since Palur is divided as Keezhapalur and Melapalur. During Chozha period the same was called as Siru Pazhuvur.

In PeriyaPuranam Sekkizhar, records that Thirugnanasambandar visited this temple after worshiping Lord Shiva of Thiruvarathurai.

Some of the important features of this temple are….
The temple is facing east with a three tier Rajagopuram. Balipeedam, Dwajasthambam and Rishabam are immediately after the Rajagopuram. In sanctum Moolavar is of swayambhu, small and always covered with kalasa.  Since the moolavar is of Putru / ant hill – abhishekam is not done and only sambrani oil is applied. In koshtam, Vinayagar, Dakshinamurthy, Lingothbavar, Brahma and Durgai.

Abutting Ardha mandapa Kala Samhara, Arthanareeswarar, Kalyanasundarar, Gangalar and Bhairavar. Urchavars 63var, Thiripuranthakar, A bronze idol of Chandikeswarar doing Shiva Pooja and Rishabaroodar on south side platform.

In Prakaram Durgai, Thirunavukkarasu Swamigal, Thirugnanasambandar, Vinayagar, Veerabhadra, and Saptamatrikas. Ambal is in a separate Sannadhi facing east.

The Sanctum sanctorum consists of sanctum, antarala and artha mandapam. The Vimana is of Vesara style on the sanctum.  The Dwarapalaka’s are made of Stucco. There is no Navagraha shrine in this temple.

The 15th Century Saint Arunagirinathar has sung Hymns in praise of Lord Muruga of this temple.

HISTORY AND INSCRIPTIONS
Since Thirugnanasambandar has sung hymns in praise of Lord Shiva of this temple, the original temple might have existed before 7th Century. Latter during Parantaka-I period the temple was reconstructed in to Stone temple and extended further during Vijayanagara period. Another Shiva Temple in the same Village called Pasupatheeswaram ( old name Maravaneeswaram ) was built by King Pazhuvettaraya’s son Kandan also gifted to this temple.

This temple also has the inscriptions of “Perumpazhuvur Pazhuvettarayar”.  As per the inscriptions this place was called as Brahmadeya Pazhuvur Alandurai, Kundra Kootram Uththunga Valanattu Sirupazhuvur  and Lord Shiva was called as Alandurai Mahadevar. The inscriptions belongs to Kulothunga Chozha, Rajathirajan, Rajendra Chozha and Vijayanagara Dynasty.   

There were 23  inscriptions recorded  from this temple and most of the inscriptions belongs to Chozha period.  The inscriptions mainly talks about the endowment of  Naivedyam, burning of lamps, Sacred bath to Lord Shiva and prayers etc,. For the same donations were made in the form of Land from which 2 nazhi rice was received, 50 kasu for Thirumanjanam, 2 kalanju for burning a perpetual lamp, 3.5 ma land to give 2 nazhi rice for Naivedyam and 90 Sheeps for burning one lamp. The inscriptions also records the political informations. The endowments are established by both Male and female.

Rajaraja-I’s 10th reign year inscription starts with his full meikeerthi/ title, records the endowment of naivedyam for which 2 nazhi rice to be supplied from the gifted land. 8th reign year inscription records the endowment of Naivedyam and thirumanjanam, on Chithirai Vishu day, Uttarayanam and Dakshinayanam  for which paddy and 50 kasu was gifted to this temple. This gift was given by Perum Pazhuvur Adigal Pazhuvettarayar’s wife Veeranan otriyur

Rajaraja-I’s 10th reign year inscription records the endowment of 2 nazhi Thumbaipalli thamam Parichattam ( ?), by Adikal Pazhuvettaraiyar Kandan maravanar Perunthirathu Arayan Sundara Chozhan for which a land was gifted to this temple.

Another Kovi Rajakesari’s 8th reign year inscription records the endowment of burning a perpetual lamp for which 90 saava moova peradu / Sheeps Kizhavan Nambanai adikal Pazhuvettaraiyar kandan Maravanar. The same person Kizhavan Nambanai adikal Pazhuvettaraiyar kandan Maravanar’s daughter  and his wife gifted 190 kalanju Silver Kalasam.  

Vikarama Chozha’s 6th reign year inscription records the endowment of Naivedyam, Kariyamuthu, neiyamuthu, adaikayamuthu and burning of a sandhi lamp for which land measuring 3.25 veli situated in three different places for which the periphery limit are also mentioned. In the inscription it is mentioned the god’s name as Vanavichathiranallur Mudikonda Chozheswaramudayar. Whether this donation is for which temple or not is not known.

Koparakesari’s 13th reign year inscription records the gift of a Cheppu pot by Pampuni Kootrathu Pampuni merchant Kunavan Vadavayilan. ( measuring 70 Cheppu kalaipanai in weight  Cheruvidai ).

A loose stone inscription dated Parithabi year Avani month, 22nd day records the endowment of burning a day lamp for which a Thoppu ( farm ) at Elankuruchi by Arasunilaiyitta ( may be an official ) Rangappa Mazhavaraya Pandithar to god of Yogavaneswara Swami.

During Vijayanagara Period 30 pon ( Gold?) tax was exempted in three Villages and gave it to this temple. A person called Ravi Maniyan, constructed a mandapa.

Maha Kumbhabhishekam was conducted after thirupani in 1974.

LEGENDS
It is believed that Ma Parvati, Brahma, Maha Vishnu, Indra, Agathiyar, Chandran, Suryan, Vasishtar, Kasibar and Vyasar worshiped Lord Shiva of this temple.

விளைவு நெறிப் பத்தியெனு மணிவாயற் புகழ்ந்துருகி விரும்பியென்றும்
தவள நகைக் களபமுலை அருந்தவ நாயகி கமலச் சரண்புக்கேமால்

Since Lord Shiva blesses us under the Pazhu tree - Banyan tree / Alamaram, Lord Shiva is called as Alanthurai Nathar and the place is called as Pazhuvur. Once ma Parvati closed the eye’s of Lord Shiva ( the legend is very much similar to Kanchipuram Ekambareswarar Temple ). At that moment the universe has become dark. All the devas and Sages do not know what to do. Since it made hardship fo all the living things of this universe and Ma Parvati was affected by this sin. To get rid of the sin Lord Shiva asked ma Parvati to go to earth and do penance at this Yogavanam. Ma Parvati came to this place Yogavanam and started her penance standing on one leg. Lord Shiva came to this Yogavanam and united together with Ma Parvati.   Hence People pray Lord Shiva for unity of husband and wife due to difference of opinions, divorce, etc, to get relieved from Brahmahathi dosha,  etc,. Kalyana / marriage Pariharam is also performed in this temple at Kalyana Durgai sannadhi.

After Kayamugasuran’s  samharam, Vinayagar came to this temple and danced. Hence Vinayagar is called as “Nirutha Vinayagar”.

Parasuramar worshiped Lord Shiva to get rid of the sin caused due to killing of his mother after creating a theertham. Hence, the temple tank is called as Parasuramar theertham. Parasuramar’s sleeping posture murti is available at the  sanctum sanctorum entrance. 

On Tamil month Panguni 18th day Suryan worship Lord Shiva through his light rays.

POOJAS AND CELEBRATIONS
Apart from regular poojas, special poojas are conducted on monthly pradosham, Maha Shivaratri in the month Masi ( Feb – March ), Annabhishekam in the month Aippasi ( Oct – November ), Ezhur Thiruvizha, and other important festivals. During Panguni month Utsavam on 3rd day Urchavar will be taken to Melapalur Jamathkini Temple, where Lord Shiva will give darshan to Jamathkini.

Bus facilities are available from Tiruchirapalli, Thiruvaiyaru, Ariyalur.
The temple is 13 KM from Ariyalur, 17 KM from Thirumazhapadi,  20 KM from Thiruvaiyaru, 55 KM from Kumbakonam, 61 KM from Tiruchirappalli and 309 KM from Chennai.
